EU headquarters Berlaymont - Brussels, Belgium
Period: 2000-2004
Architect: B2000
Client: B2000
Used materials: 5.000 m² of aluminium standing seam (Kalzip alclad stucco, thickness 1 mm), 2.000 m² of aluminium louvers (type Robertson – UK) and 450 m² of zinc for the cafeteria (Quartz zinc thickness 1 mm).
The famous Berlaymont building (EU headquarters) had to be completely renovated because of the use of asbestos in the building. Architect B2000 also made a proposal for a new façade and a new roof composition. ME Construct was responsable for the aluminium roof and wall cladding, including the aluminium louvers. The biggest challenge was the confined space in the city center and the height of the building.
Recently, ME Construct renovated part of the roof, damaged after a fire in the summer of 2009. They used a 300 tonnes crane to lift the materials on the roof.
Turnover: € 2.100.000
